ENGLISH NATIONAL BALLET’S CHRISTMAS PRODUCTION OF THE SNOW QUEEN SPARKLES WITH SWAROVSKI

Swarovski Crystal has chosen to support one of the world’s leading ballet Companies, English National Ballet, for their new production of The Snow Queen. The costumes will come to life with the adornment of hundreds of thousands of Crystallized Swarovski Elements, accenting the movement of the dancers and adding light and sparkle to the stage.

Choreographed by Michael Corder, The Snow Queen is spectacular and majestic; a theatrical presentation drawing its inspiration from the fairy tale world of Hans Christian Andersen’s winter story. Costume designer Mark Bailey used over 2,400 bespoke crystal transfers in the shapes of snowflakes and branches to embellish the costumes of the 64 dancers.

English National Ballet’s full orchestra plays Julian Philips’s arrangement of Prokofiev’s glorious music. The Snow Queen is Michael Corder’s third new work for English National Ballet; the award-winning Cinderella and Melody on the Move were received with standing ovations and critical acclaim both across the UK and internationally.

Swarovski crystal is at home on the stage as it is on the screen, illustrated by its prevalent history in theatre, opera, ballet and cabaret. Swarovski has had the privilege to adorn stars such as Maria Callas, Josephine Baker and Shirley Bassey; Marilyn Monroe was even covered in thousands of Swarovski crystals during her performance in 1962, when she seductively sung Happy Birthday to President Kennedy. Modern day icons such as Madonna and Dita Von Teese take centre stage with costumes crystallized by Swarovski.

From the early days of Hollywood, Swarovski has worked hand in hand with costume and set designers, creating show-stopping jewels, costumes and stage sets which grab the spotlight. The company’s reputation for the highest quality and largest variety of the finest cut crystal is unchallenged on and off the stage and silver screen.

Over a hundred years ago, in 1895, Daniel Swarovski I, a Bohemian inventor and visionary, moved to the village of Wattens, Tyrol in Austria, with his newly-invented machine for cutting and polishing crystal jewellery stones. From these beginnings, which revolutionized the fashion world, Swarovski has grown to be the world’s leading producer of precision-cut crystal, for fashion, jewellery and more recently lighting, architecture and interiors. Today, the company, still based in Wattens, family-owned and run by 4th and 5th generation family members, has a global reach, with some 20,000 employees, a presence in over 120 countries and a turnover in 2006 of 2.33 billion Euros. Comprising two major divisions, one producing and selling loose crystals, the other creating design-driven finished products, the Swarovski corporation also includes four industrial brands, Tyrolit®, manufacturing grinding tools, Swareflex, for road safety reflectors, Optik, producing precision optical instruments and Signity, Swarovski’s brand for genuine and created gemstones. While Swarovski crystal, known by its product brand name CRYSTALLIZED TM- Swarovski elements, has become an essential ingredient of international design, Swarovski’s own-brand accessory, jewellery and home décor lines are sold through more than 600 Swarovski stores and concessions in all major fashion capitals, and the exclusive Daniel Swarovski accessories collection has become the company’s Couture signature. The Swarovski Crystal Society has close to 400,000 members’ worldwide, keen collectors of the celebrated crystal figurines, and in Wattens, Crystal Worlds, the multi-media crystal museum, has attracted over 7 million visitors since it was opened in 1995, as a celebration of Swarovski’s universe of innovation and inspiration, of crystal as the ultimate creative material.
