ANGEL CHANG - NEW YORK
Autumn/Winter 08
"Progress has always started from a forward-thinking idea. Jules Verne predicted the invention of the submarine in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Leonardo da Vinci drew out the helicopter centuries before it could be built. It was through their vision that they gave the public a picture of the future -- and what the public, in turn, made into reality over time. This season, I am using advanced-technology fabrics to build a travel wardrobe: for three-day, five-day, and seven-day trips. We will continue to travel more in the future and we will require a wardrobe to facilitate our nomadic lifestyle. Taking this as a starting point, four artists collaborated with me on this travel wardrobe of the future. Vito Acconci contributed ideas for Swarovski crystal-imbedded magnetic-field clothing, Olaf Breuning drew child-like sketches of Nature overcoming Man, Johannes Wohnseifer worked with a color-changing time zone print, and Tim Dubitsky attached speakers into glow-in-the-dark satin jackets. Swarovski crystals were used to accentuate style lines, chart out global plane routes, and add sparkle to Nature-inspired prints. By collaborating with these artists, and in partnership with Swarovski, we hope that our ideas will inspire what people will wear in the future."
